Build a Better Burb
Build a Better Burb is an urban design competition for Long Island sponsored by the Long Island Index. We designed the site to evoke the horizontality of Long Island while remaining simple to use. The site is simple in appearance but is functionally sophisticated. We built a content-management system to administer the text and graphics, a full submission module to receive competition entries and store them in a database, a gallery to display the entries separately to the judges and later to the public, a voting module for the “people’s choice” competition, and a set of mode switches to determine what components of the site appear as the competition phases elapse. The site is built on the Ruby on Rails framework.
food52
food52 is a hybrid recipe site, crowd-sourced cookbook project, sophisticated food blog, boutique, and community of serious home cooks. Accomplished food editors/writers Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs came to us with a daring, brilliant idea. We designed their branding, gave structure to this complex mix, and over a period of five months designed and built the food52 web site. Recipe contests run every week for a year, and the winning recipes are included in an actual cookbook. We filled it out with features so that along the way you can post your recipes to facebook and twitter, cook from your laptop without smearing egg on the trackpad, and follow your favorite cooks. food52 is a place to keep your favorite recipes, try new ones, and follow some exciting talk about food and cooking.
Imperial Woodpecker
Ten Times was called on to launch an interactive web experience for Imperial Woodpecker, an exciting new production company recently founded by director Stacy Wall and producer Doug Halbert. The Ten Times approach features an intuitive interface with a navigation that recedes into the background allowing video content to take center stage. Ten Times hopes to assist Imperial Woodpecker in their lofty ambitions of producing the last ever TV commercial. A tongue in cheek testament to the evolving media landscape.
StoryCorps
StoryCorps is a national project to inspire people to record one another's stories in sound. This recording studio for person-to-person interviews was initially installed in the concourse of the temporary WTC PATH station. Built to be redeployed, it was moved to Foley Square in lower Manhattan in 2008. The skin is a sign, and the exterior suggests lightness, activation, and the sophisticated recording technology. The interior is familiar and reassuring. The glass skin, constructed around a prefabricated acoustical booth, has particular optics: up close, the view in is blurred. At a distance the glass becomes transparent. Commuters away at the escalators see through the glass to the recording booth and people within. Approaching, this view is obscured, preventing a "fishbowl" effect while allowing transparency. Color LED lighting is programmed to represent the booth state -- open or closed, and whether an interview is in progress. MESH designed the booth with MASdesign. www.storycorps.org
JetBlue StoryBooth
Launched in Rockefeller Plaza and proceeding to a multi-city tour, this booth represents the new standard for the advertising industry, focused on consumer participation. Visitors enter the booth to record video testimony of their experiences flying JetBlue. The best stories are used in TV commercials and on the Web. MESH designed and built the booth and designed the full LED video wraparound display. www.jetblue.com/experience
TAPP NYC
New York City has released over a hundred tables of city data for public use -- the Datamine. Some of it is banal, some is interesting. In early 2010 New York City held a competition to develop apps to use this data. People want to use it - analyze it, overlay it, map it. There are two barriers: 1) The data is in raw form and generally updated via an Excel file, so a programmer needs to build the application to import the tables into a usable database. 2) The applications will be isolated from each other, so each is an island of an idea. TAPP NYC is a platform that takes datasets from the Datamine and makes them available to applications via a simple API. At the same time, by tagging the datapoints, we enable two applications that access the same datapoints to share information about it. To demonstrate the concept, we built a core TAPP site that finds sidewalk cafés, laundromats, swimming pools, basketball courts, playgrounds, and city events.
Morsel/RAM2
On the occasion of the randomaccessmemory.org launch, MESH created a physical interface to the RAM database, to encourage an experience with the data different from that at home using the web. What makes a space feel different, expanded, connected to someplace else? What if we have to physically move to find different data? How does that change our perception of the space? There are thousands of stories within, powerful true accounts from peoples memories. In the sliding screen interface you can click a word on the touchscreen to find memories containing that word. The memories are retrieved and laid out chronologically and virtually along the 20ft track, which you browse by walking. We display the memories not as paragraphs as on the site, but through RSVP, a method of displaying text sequentially, one word at a time. The words flash, but if you stop and focus on one of the streams, cognition clicks, and suddenly you enter another space created by the story. Perhaps this inspires recall of your own memories, after all much of the interest is in association, what causes us to store and retrieve.
Random Access Memory
Random Access Memory is a backup archive for personal memories, for recollections important or trivial. Contribute your memories, and they are automatically stored by date. Visitors can browse them, by date, by subject or by name. RAM is a demonstration of what happens when personal information is compiled into a database that is accessible on a pseudonymous basis. Thus it performs two roles simultaneously, private and public. It stores information for the personal use of its member-visitors and it aggregates and indexes this information to amuse and enlighten all visitors. As more people use the system we will see what patterns emerge -- we can observe what kinds of memories characterize certain years. You must enter a date, a person or a subject to view the memories. From any set of displayed memories, there are hyperlinks to the people and dates in the list. As with human memory, you cannot simply dump the database -- you must seize upon a thread and free associate from there. randomaccessmemory.org

10x designed and built an interactive portfolio to showcase the work of Mott Hupfel, director of cinematography. The site promotes video work with an intuitive intuitive allowing visitors easy navigation to Motts showcase reel. motthupfel.com
The Independent Feature Project
The Independent Feature Project, the major advocacy group for American independent film, feature a pollinating theme in their identity makeover. MESH built this year's Market site in Flash, using ColdFusion to access the database of films and companies. The site features an animated, multi-flower navigation device, so the visitor moves from flower to flower as she clicks through the site.

Synth
This exhibition at White Columns, a New York galley space, explored the dissolving boundaries between the synthetic and organic through the creation of immersive installations within a large scale inflatable structure. Each work in synth feels "active" and seemingly "alive" but in reality has been created synthetically through the use of computer technology. MESH collaborated with organizer Leo Villareal on the exhibition and designed environments for two of the rooms housing interactive, projected installations. Two "synth chairs" represented an inversion of a chaise lounge, which supports the player of a networked video game in a forward-leaning, active position, in contrast to the slouch familiar to sofa-based gamers.
Tribeca Film Festival
The new site for Tribeca Entertainment includes the various activities of the company - Tribeca Film Center, the new Tribeca Film Festival, and Tribeca Productions. We wanted to make the distinctions clear while unifying the constituent elements. The site needed to reflect devotion to both the neighborhood and the culture of film. MESH developed a site that enables visitors to navigate across panoramas of Tribeca streets. Built almost entirely in Flash, the site reveals layers of information as one browses through these streets, suggesting a parallel between browsing through the site and wandering around the neighborhood. visit site archive
Philbrook Museum
Et In Arcadia Ego establishes a temporary electronic network of visitors and enables mediated communication among them. The explosion of instant messaging and blogging has proven that the most basic tools of connection are sufficient to transform relationships. Our premise is that the new powers of connection and communication create new venues for collaboration and learning. Integrating electronic communication into an environment with the constant possibilities of physical encounter will foster shared and unexpected experiences. The physical form is a shaded sitting area: an open octagonal bench, wood planks supported on a native limestone base, surrounded by a stand of black bamboo. Enter and see a glowing touch-sensitive screen. On the screen are fresh pictures of recent visitors, with any messages they have written.
Hybrid Exhibition Space
Two basic concepts, targeting the synergy of physical and digital-networked space: 1) enabling visitors to the exhibition to feel the exhibition extends into a dimension beyond the museum walls, offering both deeper information about works/artists and further space for exploration. 2) enabling visitors to the web site to feel they are visiting the exhibition not as a simple iteration or ad hoc collection of works, but an event, participating in the event. Exhibitions are events, not architectural designs. They are extended events, in a highly programmatic space. But what is the event? What happens there? Visitors view artworks and think about them. They have thoughts triggered by the artworks. Visitors talk to each other about the art and about other topics. Meanwhile, those who cannot attend the exhibition view it through the Web. More than simply view a collection of images, these visitors should experience the energy of the exhibition itself.

Our name, 10x, refers to the transformation of perspective resulting from adding another zero, as the Eames so succinctly depict in their film, Powers of Ten.

MESH Architectures
Eric Liftin founded MESH Architectures in 1997 as a hybrid architectural practice in both the physical and virtual realms. MESH designs mostly architecture, including buildings, homes, offices, retail spaces, and art installations. With the conviction that they are also habitable spaces, we also design Web sites and integrate them into architecture, reconceiving relationships between people and their environments in the age of the digital network.
The firm is always exploring new materials and technologies. In New York, where many projects are renovations, MESH has successfully integrated contemporary materials and techniques into old structures without erasing the older construction. The firm has established a reputation for luminous spaces with new translucent materials.
